Veterans Resource Fair is a resounding success

Dozens of Veterans and their spouses looking for new opportunities packed the Aliante Library on November 7th at 1600H (4:00 p.m.) for the Veterans Resource Fair. Also, North Las Vegas residents attended to support the opening of a One-Stop Career Center within the Aliante library. The goal of the Veterans Resource Fair is to help combat common issues veterans and military spouses face when seeking unemployment. The Veterans Resource Fair was produced as a joint venture between Workforce Connection’s One-Stop Career Centers and the Armed Forces Chamber, in partnership with the North Las Vegas Library District and City of North Las Vegas.

“Many times veterans have trouble translating their military skills into civilian skills on resumes or during interviews,” said Andre’ Haynes, Founder and CEO of the Vegas based Armed Forces Chamber. “This event tackles both of those problems, as well as provides veterans and military families a one-stop event to access valuable community resources.”

The Veterans Resource Fair program kicked off at 1545 H (3:45 p.m.) with a welcome by North Las Vegas Mayor Pro Tem Scott Black, followed by remarks from North Las Vegas Councilman Richard Cherchio, Jill Hersha from the Workforce Connections Board plus Las Vegas-Clark County Library District and Bonita Fahy from One Stop Career Center. Andre' Haynes from the Armed Forces Chamber anchored the program with brief remarks and by holding a moment of silence for Armed Forces members who have passed away and by wishing audience member and event sponsor, Chef Dennis Jones from Soulfood Creative Kitchen, a happy birthday.

The Veteran Resource Fair featured on-site employment interviews by Protective Force International, the U.S. Census Bureau and Wells Fargo. Also, The Cosmopolitan of Las Vegas conducted mock interviews and provided employment information. Keynote speakers included Amy Frost, MBA, MA , Author and Business Coach; Kathleen Taylor, Member of State of Nevada Commission on Nevada Minority Affairs and Niecy Walker, Human Resources Business Partner for City of Henderson. Jeff Wiley, Regional Banking District Manager of Wells Fargo Bank was scheduled to also keynote but unable to attend due to a personal injury. Vendors included Goodwill of Southern Nevada, Help USA, US Vets and many more. Catering was provided by Soulfood Creative Kitchen.

The One-Stop Career Center inside the Aliante Library offers no cost employment and training assistance to the public. It is open Monday through Thursday, 10:30 a.m. to 6 p.m., Friday from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. and the third Saturday of every month from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.
